Catamaran Races Ferry – David versus Goliath
Extreme sailor Michael Walther had long pursued the idea of one day embarking upon a race against a ferry. Could a flimsy catamaran get up to the same speed as a hybrid fuelled hulk? On 22nd November 2016, Michael Walther challenged the Scandlines hybrid ferry Prinsesse Benedikte on the Fehmarn Belt. The race along the route of the Puttgarden-Rødby crossing was a battle between two unequal adversaries – a maritime David versus Goliath.
Even though the nimble catamaran – the David in this duel – was defeated in the race against Goliath, the contest was a spectacle the like of which had never been seen on the Fehmarn Belt before.
